Where your power comes from

Do you know where your power comes from? In Virginia, coal plants provide 44% of all our electricity, nuclear 38% and natural gas is 13%. The rest comes from renewables — including wood and municipal solid waste — hydropower and oil, according to the latest data from the U.S. government’s energy statistics agency, the Energy Information Administration.

The electricity is provided by the state’s three large power companies, 13 electric cooperatives and 12 municipal systems. You can view their territories here.
