#ValueYourPower this Earth Day by Saving Energy
Since April 22, 1970, Earth Day has been a call to action for everyone to protect and preserve the environment. Richmond and several other cities throughout the United States hold annual Earth Day events to encourage citizens to be more sustainable and responsible in the way they interact with our planet.
Most people may not know this, but energy efficiency plays a huge role in helping save the planet beyond cutting back your energy bill! When companies and individuals use less energy, power plants produce less energy based on reduced demand. This in turn leads to less pollution and a healthier environment.
Virginia Energy Sense’s mission is to help Virginians understand their energy use, and take steps to easily and cost effectively reduce their energy. Our goal this Earth Day is to make sure you’re well-equipped to help Virginia take a giant step forward in reaching its goal of reducing electric energy consumption by 10 percent below 2006 levels by 2022.
To ensure you’re prepared, we’re providing you with a list of ways to save energy. Below are some tips you can use to reduce your energy consumption and help the planet!
Keep the Planet Green with these Energy Saving Tips
Use Your Ceiling Fans – Make sure the fans are moving counter-clockwise to circulate cooler air throughout your home. You’ll also save more by relying less on your thermostat.
Clean Your Refrigerator – When a refrigerator’s coils are covered with dust and debris it won’t run efficiently. Clean the coils on your refrigerator as well as dusting behind it and underneath it.
Close those Vents – If you have some rooms in your house you spend little time in, close the air vent in that room and close the door. By closing the vent, your HVAC system won’t be cooling a room you don’t use much.
Install a smart thermostat – A smart thermostat learns your behavior and can lower or raise the temperature if you are going to be out or not. And it lets you control your home’s temperature from your smartphone.
Utilize Power Strips – Easily turn off all your devices at once by plugging them into a power strip.
Switch to Energy Efficient Lighting – CFLs and LED light bulbs use less energy and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. Switching to them will save your office both energy and money!
Maintain your HVAC system – Ensure your HVAC systems are running efficiently by having your system serviced once per year and by cleaning or changing your filters monthly. Doing so can reduce energy consumption up to 15% and increase savings by up to 7.5%.
Purchase ENERGY STAR appliances – Older appliances are not as efficient as newer models. Purchasing ENERGY STAR equipment is a great step toward increasing your home’s overall energy efficiency.
Sufficiently insulate your home –Poor insulation can make a chilly night even colder. Insulating your home, especially your attic and basement, will cut down on home energy use and keep out the cold.
Apply for rebates– If you’re a business or home owner, check out our residential incentives and commercial incentives pages to see if there are any government or utility energy saving programs you qualify for.
