With Earth Day quickly approaching, millions of people and business around the world are gearing up to take action to show their support and efforts to protect the planet by participating in the World Wildlife Fund’s #EarthHour “Lights Out” display, on March 24, from 8:30 – 9:30pm. Switching off our lights for only an hour might seem like a small step, but it’s actually a big step toward becoming more energy efficient and making everyone conscious of their interactions with the environment. Virginia Energy Sense is tasked with raising awareness in the Commonwealth about easy ways to save energy and help Virginia meet its goal of reducing electric energy consumption 10 percent below 2006 levels by 2022. Below is a list of tips we’ve compiled to help you do your part and save energy, not only during #EarthHour, but every hour each day! Energy Saving Tips
Change your Lighting – When not in use, turn off your lights and consider replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFLs or LEDs. Making either adjustment will gradually reduce your energy consumption.
Install a Smart Thermostat – A smart thermostat automatically adjusts the temperature based on your preferences and habits, and allows you to remotely control the device from anywhere in the world with your smartphone, computer or tablet.
Use your Fans – If your home has fans in various rooms, adjust them so the air is evenly circulated throughout the house. Your home become more comfortable and it’ll help cut back your energy bill.
Check your Fireplace – Replace older fireplaces with energy efficient systems to reduce drafts and make sure it’s sealed properly.
Out with the Old – Older appliances tend to use more energy than newer models. Purchasing ENERGY STAR brand appliances is an easy, great step toward increasing the overall energy efficiency in your home.
Mind those Shades – Remember to keep the shades and curtains open during the day on the south side of your home to prevent your heating unit from working twice as hard to warm the space.
Replace your Filters – Regularly maintaining your filters and replacing them a few months at a time will ensure they run at peak efficiency.
Apply for Rebates– If you’re a business or home owner, check out our residential incentives and commercial incentives pages to see if there are any government or utility energy saving programs you qualify for.
